A Tribute to Fr. John Joseph Henchey
(Fr. Joe's Grand-Uncle)

Fr. Joseph Henchey, CSS, was named for his paternal grand-Uncle,
Fr. John Joseph Henchey, who
was known to the family as 'Fr. Joe'. He was ordained at Niagra University
in June, 1901, offered his First Mass in St. Charles' Church, Woburn, MA, on
June 9, 1901 - and left shortly thereafter for Beresford, in the [South]
'Dakota' Territory. Unfortunately, 'Fr. Joe' died that same year, on Dec.
5, while serving as Assistant at the third St. Teresa's Church in that
town in South Dakota. He was buried there on a knoll - and Fr. Joe [the
younger!] was invited there by Bishop Robert Carlson in the summer of 2001
to preach the Seminarian Retreat - and offered Mass for his noble ancestor,
the late Fr. John Joseph Henchey at the grave site.
